Listening and Learning Together: A Message from Our Executive Director, Deb Ryun

Dear River Friends,

I write to you today with a heavy heart. The stress we all feel from the coronavirus was enough, but witnessing George Floyd’s death has left so many of us feeling uncertain about our future and what to do. The fear, outrage, trauma, pain, and sadness expressed in the subsequent demonstrations clearly shows how much work we need to do to come together as a united country, in a fair and just world.

I am lucky enough to work for an organization which understands that sustainability is only achieved with a healthy economy, society, and environment. It is clear that we as a nation are not in balance. Bringing about balance will require careful, attentive listening and learning to become better allies of diverse communities. We are committed to learning what we can do to make our community safer and more equitable through our programs and activities.

The question my staff has been asking is, what can we do now and how do we move forward? There is no easy answer. One thing I do know is that we can all give of our time, treasure, and talents to organizations we believe in. The St. Croix River Association will continue our good work, but through a new lens. There is no going back, and we know these difficult issues will not just go away. I will look to the wisdom and experience of all of you in addressing these issues and making our community a better place for everyone.

Ever Forward,

Deb Ryun
Executive Director
